A hotel cut each winter from the frozen river beside it.

Entry 1: Icehotel

Jukkasjärvi, Sweden

Every winter a team harvests blocks from the frozen Torne River and builds a hotel out of them. In spring it melts back into the river. Artists apply to design the art suites, so no two seasons look the same.

Since 2016 a permanent building, Icehotel 365, has kept ice rooms open all year, cooled in summer with solar power. Most guests pair one night on the ice, on reindeer hides in thermal sleeping bags, with nights in warm rooms nearby. The village lies north of the Arctic Circle, in Swedish Lapland.
